Davie – some visual mementos

logo
The Davie logo.

Our holdings concerning the Davie yards are quite extensive, and, as always, there are always images that can be added to other research pages. We have therefore selected a few items that compliment our Davie yards history and links to more details.

The rather colourful logo shown here was in extensive use from 1958 to 1976.

BROOM BALL GAME
DAVIE SHIP ENGINEERING
VS
H.M.C.S. BONAVENTURE
1969

This rather magificent trophy – a solid brass miniature steam whistle on a cedar base – may have been manufactured either by Davie engineers or on board HMCS Bonaventure. It is part of our Donald S. Jones collection; Cdr Jones served as Chief Engineer on the "Bonnie" before becoming the RCN engineer in charge of many Davie ship projects. The the total height is 16½ inches, and the base measures 12¼ by 5¾ inches.

Our records do not indicate whether Davie engineers or the crew of the "Bonnie" may have won the match...

Christmas card

The Davie shipyards celebrated year end festivites. The one shown here probably dates to 1959. John Shepherd, whose signature appears on the card, became vice-president and general manager of Davieship in 1972.

Golfing

Last year (2023) Davie announced that "The DavieSpirit was on full display this Saturday at the 3rd edition of the Davie Golf Tournament! Thanks to all participants, volunteers, organizers and sponsors for making this a memorable event. See you next year!

We believe that they might have made a slight mistake with "third edition" – this image suggests that the tournament date back to at least 1962.
