The Scottish Maid as 'the world's first clipper'

Scottish Maid

Scottish Maid, from a painting by J. Fanner, 1888.

This note by John Lyman in the Mariner's Mirror, volume XXX (1944) was in response to a previous article dicussing whether the first clipper ship[s] were Scottish or American. He discusses definitions and timelines in general with specific reference to Hall shipyard of Aberdeen's Scottish Maid of 1839 and Donald McKay's Rainbow of 1845.

A pdf copy of his note is available here.
